I'm a week in..... day 7 is today

Ok - today is the 7th day. So far so good. I'm losing weight, and actually I am not miserable either. I do realize that I will lose more weight in the beginning and it will slowly taper down - but as long as I'm losing weekly, I'm happy.

One thing I did when I started was download a calorie counting app for my phone. I got Calorie Count - no science behind it, it was one of the first ones to pop up in my search, had good reviews and I liked the screen shots. Works like most I bet.. you enter your personal info (age, weight, height, etc) and then it gives you the amount of calories you can burn for the day. It has a food log to enter everything you eat, with the calories built into it to make it easier (you can use this feature or just enter your own too). As you exercise you can enter it in there also adding to the calories available for that day. It also has a scanning feature - you can scan the bar code from a food or drink and enter the portion you had to get it in the log also. Overall I'm happy with the app so far.

The biggest thing I have learned this week is I must have been eating a scary amount of calories some days. I mean things I used to eat thinking they were healthy have crazy calories. For example... I used to like to eat salsa and chips (and I still do). But I looked at the calories and the salsa is fine but the chips. HOLY COW! The Kroger tortilla chips we have are insane high on calories. for 150 calories you get seven chips. SEVEN! Who eats just 7 chips? I learned that for less overall calories I can have 3 ounces of lettuce (which is about a 1/3 of a bag of shredded lettuce), a grilled chicken breast (4ounces), and lite Italian dressing. After the salad I would feel satisfied, where as the chips and salsa I would be still be chowing down, or looking for something in the cabinet sweet to offset those chips.

One other fear I had was eating out - how would this affect my calories, and how in the world would I figure it out. Well, we ended up going to Red Robin on Wednesday. I was worried about this all morning Wednesday. I talked with my sister Holly, and she told me they had the nutritional info on their website. So I went there and found they had a app for it too. I downloaded it and started checking things out. I ended up getting the Esanada Chicken Platter. It came with two chicken breasts, a salad with a chipotle dressing, and a tortilla scoop chip with salsa in it. All of that and a couple glasses of water I was out of there at 704 calories. Bingo I did it. And the meal was very filling and good tasting.

The other thing I noticed this week. Energy loss while exercising on a lower calorie diet. On Sunday (the 2nd day in to the diet) I went for a 3 hour bike trainer ride (riding my bike on a indoor trainer). And at 2 hours 26 minutes I ran out of gas. No more energy. To the point that I couldn't even turn the pedals over. I looked at what I ate before and it just was not enough before that kind of workout. So Tuesday I planned it differently. I ate my normal breakfast, a mid morning snack, lunch, afternoon snack, and an early dinner - I think I was at around 1200-1300 calories before the ride, this way I could have some recovery food after the ride. Tuesday night was a 2 hour trainer ride. I ate powerbar during the ride adding energy. At 1 hour 30 minutes - just felt tired again... not as bad as last time - but definitely not full power. So now Thursday is the next one. I started the day again eating the same -but at the afternoon snack and dinner I ate more. I went into the ride at 1800 calories, and ate a power bar and a gel pack in the workout. Two hours done. Perfectly - felt great. So my current thought it more calories before those workouts. Because I burn so many calories during these workouts - I have to load up before.

Anyways that is all I have today... Last Saturday I started this adventure at 224.6lbs and today I am at 215.8lbs. Week one I'm down 8.2 pounds, I am a ton more calorie aware. If I can continue losing I will be happy- just 2 pounds a week is my goal. I want to lose it and keep it off. I don't want to lose muscle, so I will continue my workouts to keep up the progress. If you are still reading this, Thank you! I am posting this to show others the struggles of weight, things I find out as I go, and hopefully to motivate you a little.

Time to get serious.... this year I am going to do it...

Ok, I'm now in my forties, overweight, still try to be a weekend warrior, and I love food. I have been riding my bike and exercising quite a bit over the last year... and I'm pretty much in the same place I was a year ago. I am 224 pounds... this is tough, because I was always the skinny kid. Looking back I can see it happening. I ate out a ton more, and food became a friend, instead of a fuel. I do not want to live to eat anymore, I want to eat better to live better.

So Saturday I downloaded a Calorie Count app for my phone - I am going to try to watch my portion size and calories. I 'think' I ate well before - just too much. When you think of portions, I always think back to High School health class - your stomach is approximately the size of your fist. I was definitely eating too much. And as the economy went bad and everyone was watching their money, when we were going out to eat, I would sometimes pick food by the best deal for the dollar rather than best fuel for my body.

I'm posting this to be accountable. I know so many people struggle with it - and I hope that you can find something, no matter how small it is, from this that helps you.

To help my protions, about a week ago I actually started this, but I would spend some time preparing food for meals ahead of time. Cooking it if possible so that it just needs a microwave reheat to eat. This week I have continued it, but added the calorie count. One thing I got from my sister a while back was planning dinners out for the week. I found it does 2 things. #1 - saves you money when you go to the grocery because you know what you need to buy and not shopping for food there. And #2 lets me plan a healthy food (easy to calculate calorie). Sometimes this is hard to do, and other times I don't have enough days in the week for things I think of...lol.

I had my first calorie problem yesterday while riding my bike. I ate breakfast, mid morning snack, and lunch and headed in to ride the bike trainer for 3 hours. Well - 2 hours in I ran out of gas. I had no more energy... I couldn't turn the pedals over with barely any resistance on them. I did not eat enough before to complete it. I did eat a mini Clif Bar and a Clif Mojo bar during the ride.. but they just probably bandaided the situation. But I was done at 2 hours 26 mins... I had burnt over 1,000 calories. Way more than I had eaten all day. Lesson learned....

Ok here is a picture of the menu board we use...

12 Days of Thomson

Well I won the Thomson Contest. Whooo hoo!! Big shout out to all my friends and help I got to win, couldn't have done it without you! Thanks to Thomson for first making Awesome products and also for this contest!

I opted not to get the dress up kit for the X4 stem and just get a seat clamp to finish out my bike. I didn't think I could pull off a red, blue or gold on my Green Niner.

First the cool box of goodness showed up.

And here it is....

I love when you can put a part on the bike and never have to mess with it or worry about it again.

The Shameless Thomson Blog Post

Ok - I know I don't use this blog much and I have no followers, but I'm doing this again for the Thomson points, and of course the fame of posting this to the world to see.

This is my cycling year in a quick view....

This was my first year with Champion City Cycling's bike team - a learning experience - but also thankful to have met the best bunch of friends in the world.

I have 2,220 miles for this year - the most ever for myself, may not sound like much with life, 2 kids, and all the other fun stuff in life - it's good for me.

I have climbed over 57,000 ft this year - not too bad for living in Ohio with the highest elevation is just over 1500 feet.

I have burned 96,448 calories so far this year - I want to break 100,00 calories for the year.

Anyways - I love bikes. I love working on them, riding them, helping friends out with them. I enjoy quality parts. Thomson seatposts and stems are perfect examples of parts you install and forget about. They just work, quietly never reminding you of them. The only time you remember is after a ride on the post ride clean up - when you wipe it down and think to yourself about how nice it is to have a quality part that you don't have to keep fiddling with because it was 9 grams lighter.

Anyways I can go on and on.... but 2011 has been a great year. I look forward to making 2012 even better.
